My First DSLR Camera - Nikon D90

After a long time shooting with Point & Shoot, I finally decided to go with DSLR because of its ability to control exposure in shots and lens flexibility. After a lot of research, I shortlisted Nikon D5100 and Nikon D90. Nikon D5100 being a modern camera has really great features like flip-out screen, 1080p HD video etc, but not having built-in focus motor was really a deal breaker for me. Nikon D90 being not much modern is still very solid camera. Nikon India Technical Office once said "Nikon D90 is a hot cake, go grab it.". So, I decided to spent more money and bought slightly used Nikon D90 with a kit lens 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6. Also bought Marumi 67mm UV filter with it. 18-105mm will be ideal lens, but I will definitely buy 50mm f/1.8D and 70-300mm f/4-5.6G.

Looking at it, this was my first full encounter with DSLR, I am still trying to understand it :) I will share clicks very soon, meanwhile if you like to, you can add me on Flickr.

  2. You won't regret the D90! It's a really solid camera. I shoot exclusively primes with mine with a 35mm f/1.8g and an 85mm f/1.8d for long portraits. To be honest I'd go for the 35mm f/1.8g over the 50mm unless you really want to do low-light portraits, for which the 50mm is more suited. For why? Well the 50mm works out at a 75mm on the D90's crop factor which is a little too long for walkabout - still managable, but a little too long. (It's lushness for portraits, though!) The 35mm on the other hand roughly translates as a 35mm, which is perfect for that street photography Henri Cartier-Bresson style.

Had a gander at your Flickr account and added. I like Monsoon Splash (indeed fun!) and the Focused one best, for the leading lines. Meanwhile, as a librarian I recommend hitting your local branch and piling through the photobooks of some of the greats. I learnt a lot that way! Looking forward to seeing more of your work, and feel free to pop around to my D90 blog at petetakespictures.com - or my flickr account at www.flickr.com/photos/nervouspete

    Happy shooting!

  3. Nervous Pete: Thank you so much for that insight. Being a noob in cameras and photography, didn't have any idea about crop factor, will rethink or go with 35mm.

Thanks for stopping by my flickr photos. :) Going through your photostream, excellent portraits and street photography. Added you right away and will be looking forward for more.
